From the makers of The Romantic Road (reviewed in our July-August 1989 issue), this engaging video tour does not cover Germany, exactly, but rather travels down the Rhine and Moselle Rivers. Beginning in Frankfurt, the itinerary takes in the Rheingau wine country (where bottles of white wine at the Treasure Chamber in Kloster Eberbach have gone at auction for as much as $20,000); a trip down the middle Rhine with several stops at medieval castles with inside views; and a multi-stop voyage down the Moselle, where viewers will visit Ehrenburg Castle and watch recreations of such regular medieval pastimes as jousting and roasting a pig. The final destination is Trier, Europe's oldest civilized settlement, where Roman ruins still stand. While neither the video quality nor the writing are particularly exceptional for the travel video genre, visual choices such as troubadours, dancers, jousters, and lots of food and wine, as well as the awesome castles make Classic Tour Of Germany an enjoyable trip for most armchair travelers. Recommended. (Available from: Travel Image International, P.O. Box 11216, Eugene, OR 97440 and Baker & Taylor Video.)

Star Ratings
As of March 2022, Video Librarian has changed from a four-star rating system to a five-star one. This change allows our reviewers to have a wider range of critical viewpoints, as well as to synchronize with Google’s rating structure. This change affects all reviews from March 2022 onwards. All reviews from before this period will still retain their original rating. Future film submissions will be considered our new 1-5 star criteria.
