Made under the guidance of the American Numismatics Association, and hosted by former sportscaster Bill Fleming, Collecting and Grading U.S. Coins is a highly professional and exceptionally well-produced look at the hobby of coin collecting. Fleming begins with an overview of the history of coinage, shifts to the proper handling of coins, and then moves into the major portion of the program: grading coins. Each of the five mint state grades and ten circulated grades are explained and illustrated, using the Lincoln cent and Indian cent (copper); the Buffalo nickel (nickel); the Washington quarter, Walking Liberty half dollar, Morgan dollar, and Peace dollar (silver); and the twenty dollar Liberty Head and Augustus Saint-Gaudins (gold). The tape closes with tips on cleaning (never tamper with the surface of a coin), storage and insurance, and purchasing and selling. The video quality is excellent, and the use of a split screen for showing two coins as well as a colored arrow to point out flaws, is invaluable in highlighting the fine differences between various grades. Highly recommended. (For libraries, the price on this tape is $65.00, plus $2 shipping. It comes with two books: The Coin Collectors Survival Manual by Scott Travers and Basics of Coin Grading for U.S. Coins by Ken Bressett [books not seen]. Available from Educational Video, Inc., 31800 Plymouth Road, Livonia, MI 48150).
