Created and hosted by Emmy-award winning TV news reporter John Spiropoulos, the College Freshman Survival Guide features interviews with college students on a number of topics relating to college life. Arranged in 10 chapters, the program covers: successful study techniques, roommate concerns, extracurricular activities, pitfalls of partying, test taking tips, money matters, killer syllabi, effective time management, and more. Although a program like Effective Study Strategies (reviewed in our April 1989 issue) is far more comprehensive when it comes to study techniques, this program's plus is not in the amount of information presented, but in the manner of the presentation. Young adults are more likely to listen to other young adults describing the lessons they've learned (even though there is a fair amount of repetition in the testimonials). A good start-thinking-about-college tape for high schoolers, the College Freshman Survival Guide is recommended. (See AMERICAN TRADITIONS, VOL. ONE: THE GREAT STEAMBOAT RACE for availability.)

Star Ratings
As of March 2022, Video Librarian has changed from a four-star rating system to a five-star one. This change allows our reviewers to have a wider range of critical viewpoints, as well as to synchronize with Google’s rating structure. This change affects all reviews from March 2022 onwards. All reviews from before this period will still retain their original rating. Future film submissions will be considered our new 1-5 star criteria.
