Sharyn Pak shows viewers how to choose colors and mix pigment in this informative and engaging arts and crafts guide. Working from a clear script by director (and husband) Larry Withers, Pak discusses “how to look at an object, notice the color, then mix a color to fit.” She touches on hue, value, intensity, and color bias (in which the undertones of two mixed components determine whether the result is clear and vibrant or subtle and subdued). The presentation is well organized, moving from a list of materials through color theory and hands-on exercises to actually mixing paints, then painting a still life. Pak routinely pauses to summarize points or to include a factoid about, say, the temperature of colors (warm or cool). DVD extras include PDF files (color wheels, color bias wheels, and value scales, as well as a form for “auditioning” a new color). Highly recommended. Aud: P. (F. Gardner)

Star Ratings
As of March 2022, Video Librarian has changed from a four-star rating system to a five-star one. This change allows our reviewers to have a wider range of critical viewpoints, as well as to synchronize with Google’s rating structure. This change affects all reviews from March 2022 onwards. All reviews from before this period will still retain their original rating. Future film submissions will be considered our new 1-5 star criteria.
