Mark W. Muesse, associate professor of religious studies at Rhodes College, is the instructor for this 36-part, 18-hour Teaching Company course in comparative religion, designed to illuminate both the lives and beliefs of the four titular figures and analyze the similarities and differences in their teachings. Muesse stands at a podium to deliver his lectures, accompanied by occasional printed titles and art reproductions, but while the presentation may be technically unassuming, the content is consistently stimulating. Muesse has chosen, in accordance with the adage “by their deeds will you know them,” to consider not just the insights gained by these men, but also the ways in which they personally put their beliefs into practice, with the end result being that viewers learn as much about the subjects' spirituality as their theological or philosophical leanings. Although many, including some viewers who already adhere to one of these faith systems, will find certain sections more instructive than others, Muesse's respectful attitude coupled with his emphasis on what all share rather than what divides them offers a welcome message. Featuring separately available course books (with lecture outlines, transcripts, maps, a timeline, glossary, and bibliography), this is recommended. Aud: H, C, P. (F. Swietek)

Star Ratings
As of March 2022, Video Librarian has changed from a four-star rating system to a five-star one. This change allows our reviewers to have a wider range of critical viewpoints, as well as to synchronize with Google’s rating structure. This change affects all reviews from March 2022 onwards. All reviews from before this period will still retain their original rating. Future film submissions will be considered our new 1-5 star criteria.
