In the fifth entry in his Consistent Tennis Win series, tennis expert Tom Avery focuses on forehand and backhand swings, volleys, and serving. His "hook" is to concentrate on two facets, and two facets only, as you swing, in an effort to "groove [the motions] into your muscle memory." For instance, the first time you swing, you concentrate on "faced closed and non-hitting hand palm down." After those facets have been ingrained into your swing, you then concentrate on "inside out and knuckles to the target" during that same swing. Avery claims that this approach will help correct errors such as meeting the ball too late, net-clearance, and beyond-baseline balls, and I believe that these drills would be useful to intermediate and advanced players who already understand the ethos of the game and are familiar with such terms as "top-spin" and "slice-shot." Unlike many videos in this genre, Avery's tapes employ no graphics and little slow motion or stop-action, but his straightforward, clear instruction, and logical approach make this one a solid purchase. [Note to Avery, though: babe, keep your day job. The song at the end of the video--sample lyric: "This guy I'm playin', he runs down every ball, if I don't start hittin' winners, I'm gonna fall"--is not Top 40 material.] Recommended. The other tapes in this series are: Consistent Tennis Wins, Strategy for Singles and Doubles, The Serve and The Backhand. Aud: P. (K. Glaser)
