Last fall we rain-farers of the pacific Northwest were treated to a wonderful sight. A pod of 19 killer whales, following a run of Chinook salmon, landed in the middle of Dyes Inlet, a smallish bay in the middle of our county. For about a month these lucky whales feasted on $3.99 a lb. fish fillet and we feasted our eyes on them like they were huge goldfish in a bowl. Sporting excellent camerawork, Cradle in the Sea brings viewers closer to a different pod, as the program follows a newborn killer whale and his extended family in a seasonal quest for food, plus observes a baby manatee and his mother as they migrate to warmer waters and join a larger group of these strange and gentle creatures. We see these big water-babies first hand as they take their initial breath of life and follow them throughout their first year. Highly recommended. Also available in a set for $49.95, with two additional volumes: Harbor Seal/Gray Whale and Spotted Dolphin/Sea Otter. Aud: E, I, J, P. (N. Plympton)
