The first in a two-part series, Creative Cakes: Basic Techniques offers cake-decorating demonstrations and tips as it follows cake artists at work (with overlaid narration). Viewers will learn about the various types of basic icings (royal, buttercream, ganache, fondant, and marzipan), making a piping application bag, how to prepare and apply chocolate (including curls and leaves), and guidelines for writing and decorating with frosting. Although the program has a distinctly British flair (including the use of the metric system), the solid tips presented here should carry across the water nicely. Recommended. [Note: the companion volume Creative Cakes: Beyond the Basics is also newly available.] Aud: P. (J. Williams-Wood)

Star Ratings
As of March 2022, Video Librarian has changed from a four-star rating system to a five-star one. This change allows our reviewers to have a wider range of critical viewpoints, as well as to synchronize with Google’s rating structure. This change affects all reviews from March 2022 onwards. All reviews from before this period will still retain their original rating. Future film submissions will be considered our new 1-5 star criteria.
