Frans Lanting and Galen Rowell are both distinguished photographers whose work has been published in books as well as National Geographic and other magazines. Their video is not intended as basic instruction, but rather addresses the subject of high-quality nature photography. Rowell focuses on reasons why an image seen "live" doesn't always turn out on film. Lanting discusses how to photograph animals close-up. While the average amateur photographer isn't likely to spend three months up a tree blind waiting for a perfect photo, there are still a number of useful suggestions here that any hobbyist can and should implement. The video also includes an interesting discussion about ethical issues, such as photographing animals in captivity vs. in the wild, "posing" flora, and computerized altering of images. Aside from the nuggets of advice and insight, nature lovers will simply enjoy looking at Lanting and Rowell's stunningly beautiful work. Part 2 covers creating photo essays, innovative exposure techniques and publishing photo books. This would serve as a more specialized and advanced complement to Weekend Photo Workshop (VL-9/96). Highly recommended. Aud: H, C, P. (R. Reagan)

Star Ratings
As of March 2022, Video Librarian has changed from a four-star rating system to a five-star one. This change allows our reviewers to have a wider range of critical viewpoints, as well as to synchronize with Google’s rating structure. This change affects all reviews from March 2022 onwards. All reviews from before this period will still retain their original rating. Future film submissions will be considered our new 1-5 star criteria.
