In this generally well done tape, eight medical professionals give newly diagnosed, non-insulin-dependent diabetics the lowdown on the types, risk factors, medications, diet, exercise, stress management, foot care, and complications of their disease. The tape's language is straightforward, its organization coherent, and its hosts knowledgeable. A potential turnoff involves the experts' obviously choreographed gestures and most of their deliveries, which range from wooden to a bit paternalistic; especially jarring was the comment that the new diabetic was about to "enjoy a new lifestyle" (talk about a positive spin!). And the scenes of the scantily-clad, Robin-Williams-level-hairy male doctor going about his exercise regime were ill-advised, to put it nicely. Despite these minor beefs, though, this tape is recommended for public library health collections. Aud: P. (K. Glaser)
