With its overhauled user interface and default XML (eXtensible Markup Language) file format, the 2007 version of Microsoft's popular Office suite offers greater integration between its individual software programs than ever before. Discover Microsoft Word 2007, Level 1 takes a basic approach, offering a step-by-step demonstration of the changes in commonly used functions in Microsoft's flagship word-processing program. Viewers will learn how to create, open, navigate, save, and print documents using what Microsoft calls the “ribbon,” a context-sensitive taskbar (replacing the static traditional toolbar and menus) that changes to match the user's functional selections. As for the new default XML format, it features the usual pros and cons of forward-thinking technology: i.e., it's very helpful when transferring data to other XML-aware programs (such as Microsoft Excel), but it's not backwards-compatible with older versions of Office. A solid introduction, nicely divided into chapters with accompanying quiz sections, this is recommended.
