Adolescence is tough, filled with self-doubt and internal criticism. This video wants to help kids build their self-esteem, and offers a dramatic skit about Gavin, a depressed teenager who's given up on himself. While watching a school film, Gavin is transported--Twilight Zone-like--into a house party, where they're mixing up a recipe--not for Bloody Marys, but for self-esteem. Gavin's guide, Nina, shows him how to gain confidence and self-respect through a series of exercises which emphasize taking positive risks, not giving in to fear, and turning that voice in your head from self-critical to self-assured. This production features fast paced editing, complimented by interesting effects and capped with a mock rock video that repeats the message to persevere and believe in yourself. Convincing? My 13-year-old didn't laugh once. A short summary of the main points are offered at the end, which will stimulate class discussion. Highly recommended. Aud: J, H, I. (E. Druda)

As of March 2022, Video Librarian has changed from a four-star rating system to a five-star one. This change allows our reviewers to have a wider range of critical viewpoints, as well as to synchronize with Google’s rating structure. This change affects all reviews from March 2022 onwards. All reviews from before this period will still retain their original rating. Future film submissions will be considered our new 1-5 star criteria.
