Divided into 50 easily-accessible segments, this step-by-step guide to mixing drinks from the “Fun-to-Know” DVD line teaches viewers the ins and outs of whetting one's whistle. Professional bartender Thomas Bitler (whose resume includes more than a decade as a barkeep at New York City's world-famous Waldorf-Astoria Hotel) provides instruction for creating 32 mixed drinks, as well as a half-dozen each of shooters, blender drinks, and non-alcoholic beverages. Although a tad nondescript in his presentation, Bitler's instruction is straightforward and succinct, and he makes the basics of bartending (covering staple liquors, glasses, mixers, and details on garnishes such as lemon twists) and preparation seem simple. From classics (Bloody Mary, Cosmo, Long Island, and different types of martinis) to innovative drinks (Blue Hawaiian, Kamikaze, Flying Grasshopper) to the teetotaler's staple—the good old Shirley Temple (and it's masculine lemon-lime counterpart, the Spider-Man), each segment features a demonstration by Bitler, followed by a text ingredients list.
