Professional trainer Amy Robinson presents family dog training fundamentals in this solid instructional guide intended to teach kids and canines simultaneously. Opening with a preface about parents setting the example for pet responsibility, Drool School includes segments such as “Starting Out Right” (including how to approach and pet the dog and gently redirect little ones), “Positive Commands” (on the basics), “Fix Bad Habits” (such as mouthing, jumping, and stealing food), “Play with a Purpose” (featuring fun games that reinforce commands), “Kids Pitch In” (offering tips on setting up tasks for older children who can feed and walk the pet), and “Teaching Tricks.” The casual format—with lots of handheld filming of families and dogs in home settings—can be a bit shaky (literally) at times, but the core lessons revolving around supervision, patience, and praise will definitely prove useful to a family with a new dog. Now, if only my wild puppy Lincoln would sit still to watch the whole thing! Recommended. Aud: P. (J. Williams-Wood)

This change allows our reviewers to have a wider range of critical viewpoints, as well as to synchronize with Google’s rating structure. This change affects all reviews from March 2022 onwards. All reviews from before this period will still retain their original rating. Future film submissions will be considered our new 1-5 star criteria.
