Called the "guru of ponds," Tim Matson is the host and narrator of this guide to earth ponds. Author of Earth Ponds: The Country Pond Maker's Guide to Building, Maintenance, and Restoration, Matson cites many uses for earth ponds in the first half of the program ("Pond Use"), including irrigation, fish farming, storage, swimming, fire protection, and even as a source for a small hydroelectric station. More than a dozen ways of using a pond are shown on camera, and various interviewees talk about the success and problems they've encountered with their ponds. The second part of the program, "Pond Construction," discusses the two types of ponds (excavated and embankment), offers suggestions for choosing a good site, talks about the importance of clear communication with the contractors one chooses to work with, and demonstrates the proper placement of spillway systems. The tape concludes with suggestions for pond maintenance and landscaping. Though not very flashy, the information on Earth Ponds is sound and presented in an easy-to-follow manner. Although the tape stands alone, it would be best used in conjunction with Matson's book. Recommended. (Available from: The Earth Ponds Company, R.R. 1, Box 77, Thetford Center, VT 05075.)
