Describing himself as an evangelist and economics as his religion, Dr. Timothy Taylor's enthusiasm is contagious, and by the end of the 18-hour Economics, 3rd Edition, one of the latest entries in The Teaching Company's “Great Courses” series, he's sure to have picked up a few “converts.” The first half of the 36-lecture series focuses on microeconomics, i.e., the economic behavior of individuals and firms, including buying and selling products and services, hiring workers, and saving and investing, along the way explaining concepts such as supply and demand, capitalism, competition, monopolies, and regulation. The second half of the course discusses macroeconomics, or the factors that contribute to the overall economic picture, such as unemployment, gross national product, periods of recession and inflation, taxes, and spending, concluding with a look at international financial issues and their effects. Separately available course guidebooks include lecture transcripts, timelines, glossaries, outlines, and bibliographies. Sure to be a welcome addition for high school and academic libraries (to supplement their own regular or distance ed courses, or for students wishing to explore topics not offered by their local institution) and a solid choice for public libraries serving adult learners, this is highly recommended.
