This excellent 2-tape set offers a fantastic jump-start for aspiring journalists. The first tape looks at the process of gathering and evaluating news, as well as making preparations for writing an article. The traditional "5Ws/H" of journalism are discussed, as well as how to conduct a good interview. The second tape gets down to the nuts and bolts of effective news writing, covering the parts of a story, the difference between feature and straight news story structure, writing headlines, and common pitfalls to avoid. Impressive production values (great editing, useful and interesting graphics, and realistic high school settings) are combined with a perfect balance of practical ("always double-check spelling") and philosophical ("lost integrity is hard to recover") guidance, making this video an essential tool for journalism classes and/or school paper staff. Some established news publications could even take a few hints from this (how many articles have you read lately that fulfill the three essential characteristics of a news story: authenticity, good taste, and mass appeal?). Highly recommended. Aud: J, H, P. (E. Gieschen)

Star Ratings
As of March 2022, Video Librarian has changed from a four-star rating system to a five-star one. This change allows our reviewers to have a wider range of critical viewpoints, as well as to synchronize with Google’s rating structure. This change affects all reviews from March 2022 onwards. All reviews from before this period will still retain their original rating. Future film submissions will be considered our new 1-5 star criteria.
