Clearly a labor of love, Michael Gold's "I Was Born to Fish": Lee Wulff on the Beaverkill is more of a tribute than a "how-to" (although Wulff is seen tying four flies--the #10 Royal Wulff, #28 Grizzly Midge, #16 Soft Body Nymph, and #14 Mayfly). Filmed on New York's famed Beaverkill River shortly before Wulff died, the video mixes aerial shots of various fishing spots along the Beaverkill, adulatory commentary from Gold (which, although it sounds awfully purple in places, does celebrate one of the true legends of fly fishing), and scenes of Wulff fishing and flying ties. Wulff's comments on trout bait he's had success with (pieces of wood, dandelion heads, wild blueberries, etc.), his pioneering of the "catch and release" movement, his comparison of a small rod to a rapier (which is not as big as a broadsword but will kill just as surely), and a fish's three lines of thought (safety, full stomach, and comfort) are both wise and humorous. However, the video quality is only fair, the organizing principle obscure, and the editing too slow for general audiences. Serious anglers will overlook these drawbacks, but others won't.Efficient Fly Casting, Vol. 1: Dry Land Casting is taught by angler Tom White, who takes viewers out to a grass field (where the fishing is admittedly poor) to demonstrate his techniques for more efficient casting. By more "efficient," White means less false casts. He shows viewers how to refine the backcast and side-arm cast, with emphasis on loop and tip control, as well as casting trajectories. Onscreen graphics showing clock positions help anglers to pinpoint their moves. a good introduction to improving one's casting technique."I Was Born to Fish": Lee Wulff on the Beaverkill is recommended, with reservations, for libraries with large sports fishing collections. Efficient Fly Casting, Vol. 1: Dry Land Casting is recommended. (R. Pitman)
