Although the family bomb shelter is considered a Cold War anachronism, current events such as 9/11 and other terrorist attacks, devastating hurricanes, and the threat of pandemic viruses are spurring families to take precautions in the face of very real threats. Offering suggestions for preparation and response to different disaster and emergency situations (from temporary communication disruptions due to solar activity to much more serious, life-threatening scenarios), Emergency Preparedness: Awareness & Survival reminds viewers that essentials—water, food, and shelter—are too often taken for granted. In the situations presented here, viewers learn about the detailed process of being prepared for emergencies (including having a disaster plan), from methods of safely storing adequate drinking water to suggestions for training (including CPR and basic first aid), as well as strategies for making food supplies last and handling pets.
