Some 500 years ago John Gay wrote “from wine what sudden friendship springs.” I suspect the truth of that adage can be found in the most elegant dining rooms…and dingiest back alleys. Of course, the notion of having a wine-tasting party for the sole purpose of letting guests have a go at six to eight bottles of my finest fruit of the vine never really crossed my mind. Until now. Enjoy Wine walks viewers through the details of hosting a successful wine-tasting party (without disturbing the peace), using a combination of voiceover narration and onscreen demonstration as a woman sets up her party, friends arrive, vino is poured, and much smiling and nodding ensues. The program suggests purchasing two or three bottles of a variety of wines, including Sauvignon, Chardonnay, Pinot Noir, Merlot, and Muscat or dessert wine; discusses why neutral flavors such as plain bread and crackers help clear the palate; and recommends a wide array of complementary foods to serve, such as apples and pears, different types of cheeses, a light chicken salad, and lots of water. Viewers will learn how to set the table, the type of wine glasses one should use (and why), and about selecting the right spittoon to get rid of the excess wine (as if!). In addition, the program covers basic wine appreciation, and even quickly touches on the winemaking process. Sounds like a lot doesn't it? Well, let's just say the narrator talks fast in order fit all this information into 26 minutes. Chockfull of really useful tips and strategies for a successful party, this is recommended. Aud: P. (N.
