Filmed on location at the Esalen Institute in breathtakingly beautiful Big Sur, California, Esalen Massage presents a "do as I'm doing" method to guide the viewer step-by-step through a total body massage. The Esalen method uses a holistic approach, incorporating the physical surroundings, soothing music, and meditation to create a total environment of physical and emotional well being and relaxation. Here, several Esalen practitioners demonstrate various massage techniques, designed to increase flexibility and circulation as well as remove tension, while voice-over narration explains the processes and philosophies behind them. The background music is interesting and subtle; the camerawork well conceived, moving slowly, smoothly, and rhythmically with the movements of the practitioner without jarring the eye; and the voice-over is informative and pleasant to listen to without putting the viewer to sleep. This film would be most appropriate supplementing a massage therapy curriculum, however the methods are easy to grasp and so clearly explained the general public will find this film interesting and useful as well.
