Instructor Chris Thile, a bluegrass mandolin virtuoso who combines boyish charm with practical explanations, demonstrates the many aspects of mandolin playing that must be mastered, including holding the pick, correct hand position, balance between up and down strokes, etc. The jacket "blurb" says that the tape "will thrill and inspire mandolinists at all levels", but I suspect beginners would have a tough time keeping up with the complexity of the lessons. To a non-musician like myself, Mr. Thile's explanations sometimes seem vague, but knowledgeable players will most likely have no trouble picking up valuable tips and techniques. One thing's for sure--the man can play, and should provide inspiration for "pickers" everywhere. Recommended. Aud. J, H, C, P. (S. Fisher)
