Adults may think the biggest thing on teens' minds these days is choosing between brands of sneakers, but what if kids knew which ones were manufactured by a company that exploits child labor in sweatshop conditions? Would that make a difference at the cash register? Should a high school senior accept a scholarship from a tobacco company? What about publishing a controversial letter, which advocated bringing guns to class for self protection, in a school newspaper? This program brings together some well-spoken young people, who tackle these questions and others, in a lively and forthright group discussion and debate. The topics, which include shopping with a conscience, political actions and trade-offs, unpopular opinions, school uniforms, drug testing, and city curfew, are bite-sized enough for use in a classroom, and marked by titles to make starting and stopping easy for teachers. Overall, this should spark lively debates among high school students, and the detailed teacher's guide will provide educators with good support. The other titles in the series are: Respecting Diversity, Health Talk, Confronting Youth Violence and Individual Values. Highly recommended. Aud: H. (E. Druda)
