The seven-part Éxito En El Norte series—produced by Iowa State University and Experience Education—is designed to help Spanish-speaking immigrants make a successful transition to living in the U.S. Presented by hosts speaking in Spanish (with no subtitles, but the print English transcripts are included), the 20-35-minute programs—Los Impuestos (Taxes), El Ciudado de Salud (Healthcare), La Ayuda Pública (Public Assistance), La Educaión (Education), Las Finanzas (Finances), El Sistema Legal (The Legal System), and La Immagración (Immigration)—cover each topic in depth (in Las Finanzas, for example, viewers learn about opening bank accounts, using ATM cards, paying bills, and establishing a credit history)—all the while addressing cultural concerns and fears commonly expressed by new arrivals. A terrific series that will be a valuable asset to public libraries, social service agencies, or anyone working with Spanish-speaking immigrants, this is highly recommended. Aud: P. (L. Stevens)

As of March 2022, Video Librarian has changed from a four-star rating system to a five-star one. This change allows our reviewers to have a wider range of critical viewpoints, as well as to synchronize with Google’s rating structure. This change affects all reviews from March 2022 onwards. All reviews from before this period will still retain their original rating. Future film submissions will be considered our new 1-5 star criteria.
