Sometimes a video peek into the creative process fails to offer much insight into inspiration and instead unintentionally showcases the tedium involved in the mechanics of artwork. Such is the case with this watercolor instructional video, which suffers from technical problems such as rough camera angles, uneven audio levels, and a maddeningly repetitive music loop (a 3-note piano riff with a "bridge" section that runs through much of the 74 minutes) that fight with the instructor for the viewer's attention. It's a shame, since the final works of art are quite nice, and instructor Claire V. Dorst, Professor Emeritus of Art at Florida Atlantic University, has a lot to offer in the way of creative approaches to watercolor, effectively demonstrating how colors create movement and tension in a piece, and providing good tips along the way. Unfortunately, as often happens, solid instruction is here undercut by poor use of the video medium. Not recommended. Aud: C, P. (C. Block)

As of March 2022, Video Librarian has changed from a four-star rating system to a five-star one. This change allows our reviewers to have a wider range of critical viewpoints, as well as to synchronize with Google’s rating structure. This change affects all reviews from March 2022 onwards. All reviews from before this period will still retain their original rating. Future film submissions will be considered our new 1-5 star criteria.
