I once saw Keb' Mo' (real name: Kevin Moore) open for the late Pops Staples at Chautauqua Auditorium in Boulder, CO, and his solo acoustic country-blues style was a sublime choice to compliment the then-elder statesman of gospel soul. In this instructional video, Mo' demonstrates how to play seven songs on his Martin steel string guitar in his signature, laidback manner (and a twinkle in his eye), showing viewers the nuances of simple, rule-breaking moves (such as sneaking an 11th chord into folk arrangements where even a common 7th chord is considered exotic), giving songs extra texture. The songs are staples from Mo's setlist, and include “Your Love,” “Life is Beautiful,” “I'll Be Your Water,” “Every Morning,” and “Tell Everybody I Know,” as well as a slide version of “America the Beautiful.” Throughout, Mo' shares some great little tricks to make simple chord voicings sound complex. Talented and easygoing, Keb' Mo' has something to teach guitarists of all abilities here. Recommended. Aud: P. (C. Block)
