An excellent companion piece to Aha Calligraphy with Fran Strom: Pointed Brush Writing (reviewed in the May 1992 issue), the second installment in the series builds on techniques learned in the first video, and teaches viewers how to draw Roman capitals, including full serifs. After a brief introduction, Strom discusses the tools of the trade and brush stroke technique before tackling the alphabet in various width groups (a "W" for instance is full width, whereas an "L" is only half width). She also points out several useful projects that viewers may want to try with their newly learned calligraphic skills (a clay tablet, a sampler, holiday cards, or decorating an umbrella). The program closes with a colorful rendition of the Roman alphabet by guest artist Marilyn Reaves. A very good program on a popular subject, Flat Brush Writing With Fran is sure to be popular. Highly recommended. (Available from: Video Textbooks, 585 Orchard St., P.O. Box 503, Ashland, OR 97520-1675; (503) 482-1334; FAX (503) 482-4253.)
