Comic (and former smoker) Robert Klein hosts this video version of the American Cancer Society's 'Freshstart' program. Broken up into 21 short segments, the program is designed to aid the would-be quitter (and according to ACS statistics, some 85% of smokers want to quit) get over the physiological, habitual, and psychological hooks of smoking. Mixing testimony from quitters with advice from experts, viewers are continually encouraged as well as kept informed of the day-to-day changes that are occurring within their bodies. Although some of the information is repeated, the basic approach is sound. And, unlike the pep talk approach of many self-help programs, the ACS doesn't dismiss the difficulties or delude the viewer about his/her chances of success. Freshstart is an honest, professional program. Because of its three-week schedule, chances are most video stores won't carry it. Many libraries, though, will have the flexibility to make this available to patrons for an extended period. Recommended.

This change allows our reviewers to have a wider range of critical viewpoints, as well as to synchronize with Google’s rating structure. This change affects all reviews from March 2022 onwards. All reviews from before this period will still retain their original rating. Future film submissions will be considered our new 1-5 star criteria.
