In this barebones production, gourd artist Melynda Lotven guides viewers through the steps necessary to create one of her most popular projects, a painted Uncle Sam birdhouse. Lotven discusses how to dry and clean gourds, covers tools and supplies needed (but neglects to mention the names of many items or where to get them), looks at several styles of décor, underscores the importance of safety, and points out (but doesn't demonstrate) some steps to prep the gourd's skin before painting. The remainder of the production is devoted to creating the birdhouse, which includes using tools to cut out entrance and drainage holes and adding the hanger before getting into the painting (a very complicated process encompassing lots of drawing, layering, shading, detailing, drying-time, antiquing, and finishing). In other words, this is a project that will be too difficult for many beginners to attempt. Other missteps include a shortage of close-ups, lots of dead air during painting, and (a particular pet peeve) title inconsistency on the DVD label, box, and title screen. DVD-ROM extras include a pattern (front only), basic gourd info, artist bio, and some details on equipment and supplies. Very optional. [Note: Introduction to Pewter Smithing, Jewelry Making with Nena, and Wood Turning Into Art are also newly available.] Aud: P. (K. Glaser)
