Sperm + egg = human zygote is the correct answer, next time your 4-year-old asks you how babies are made. This 1992 French production with new English narration introduces high school students to the science behind the sex. Students will see basic cell division, micromanipulation of cells (which allows scientists to extract or insert nuclei from cells), learn the fundamentals of DNA, and see a breakdown of the double helix model, and be introduced to the Human Genome Project (the massive mapping of human genetics), which offers myriad possibilities (and responsibilities) for future generations. Although the information is sound, the video footage is so-so, the presentation quite traditional, and some of the examples possibly alarming to more sensitive students (a fair amount of the experiments shown involve lab mice). A sequel, Genetics II: Fundamentals of DNA is also available. An optional purchase. Aud: H. (R. Pitman)
