Serving up an overview of what's good and bad in our modern diet, Get Off the SoFAS! presents the case against processed foods, excess sugars, and solid fats (the latter being the “SoFAS” in the title), reminding viewers that added sugars and certain fats are harmful to our health, but we regularly consume them in convenience and comfort foods. Basically, the program recommends eating unsaturated fat (from fish and some plant life), which is necessary in body development, storage of energy, and protection of cell membranes. At the same time, viewers are advised to cut back on saturated fats (found in dairy and meat), which can contribute to diabetes, cancer, high cholesterol, and strokes. The trans-fats in various processed foods are also singled out as being potentially harmful. Healthy eating includes the consumption of omega-3 fatty acids (nuts, seafood), which are good for the heart and brain and also possible cancer fighters; fiber (for help removing bad cholesterol from one's system); nutrient-dense foods (sweet potatoes); natural as opposed to refined sugars; and—whenever possible—choosing vegetable over animal products. A solid nutritional primer, this is recommended. Aud: I, J, H, C, P. (T. Keogh)
