Get The Job You Want!

One of the most comprehensive job search videos we've seen, Get the Job You Want! differs from many similar programs too, in that it is aimed at all audiences--not just the white collar corporate climber. Divided into three sections, the tape uses a pleasing format of an on-camera narrator who interacts with various people who appear on an inset TV picture. Part 1, "Get Started," shows viewers how to create a "Personal Data Sheet," and offers an in-depth guide to 14 job search resources--ranging from family and friends to the local library ("ask a librarian, they'll be glad to help you find what you need.") Part 2, "How to Get a Job Interview," focuses on creating resumes and cover letters, and offers several tips from a company interviewer about what interviewers are looking for. Part 3, "The Secrets of Interview Success," examines the do's and don'ts of interviews, with skits demonstrating poor interview approaches (Chatty Cathy, Silent Sam, Uninterested Ursula, and Benefits Bob), as well as how to handle problem interviewers. Created by Ann Blanchard, who spent 12 years working in the Human Resources field for Ford, Mobil, and Honeywell, Get the Job You Want! packs a lot of information into its 2-hour plus package. Two notes: first, the accompanying workbook is referred to at the beginning of the tape, but viewers are advised to use a notebook as an option, so the workbook isn't really a problem; second, each of the three sections on the tape are actually separate programs with full credits at the end of each, and a rather long dead space between the programs. Librarians may want to make a note about the "space" between the programs, or some viewers may not see Parts 2 or 3, thinking the tape is finished after the first set of credits.
