Although produced by the Library Video Network, Getting What You Want, which features noted author and speaker Kare Anderson, is generally applicable to anyone who is involved in negotiations either in his or her personal or professional life. Beginning with some self-evident truths (i.e. "people like people who are like them"), Anderson goes on to demonstrate ways to communicate effectively (drawing on core-life experiences, discussing a current pressing interest, using vivid specific details), and how to progress naturally to one's interests in a conversation (by beginning with the other party's, your shared interests, and then your individual agenda). She also emphasizes that people have three choices in a given situation (change, accept, leave). While the program occasionally slips into jargon (as in meeting a "quota of three third-party endorsements a week," which translated means: tell someone else something nice about a person whom you can't stand), the tape is mostly common sense well-delivered. Too, since it is not specifically for the library market (a wise choice on Library Video Network's part), it can be used by the staff and then put into general circulation. [Note: for an additional $20, the video comes packaged with Anderson's book and audio of the same name.] Recommended. Star Ratings
As of March 2022, Video Librarian has changed from a four-star rating system to a five-star one. This change allows our reviewers to have a wider range of critical viewpoints, as well as to synchronize with Google’s rating structure. This change affects all reviews from March 2022 onwards. All reviews from before this period will still retain their original rating. Future film submissions will be considered our new 1-5 star criteria.
