Google SketchUp: Level One

Google SketchUp is a 3-D modeling program designed for entry-level users up through professional architects, who use the software to “build” prototype objects on the computer. Available in two different versions (one free, the other a more sophisticated version for purchase), Google SketchUp is as close as a person can get to “drawing” on a computer, but with capabilities light-years beyond pencil and paper. This instructional video employs smart interactive features (such as asking viewers questions and then selecting training material most relevant their answers, or letting them check the definition of a technical term and then resume right where they left off) as it takes viewers through the process of building a simple house. Topics covered include basic concepts related to both software use and drawing (such as creating accurate dimensions, freehand drawing, moving objects, and working with surfaces), followed by a tour through the multitude of decisions regarding doors and windows, as well as creating component libraries, involved in building a house onscreen. Helpful tips include a brief discussion of minimum and optimum computer hardware specifications (including monitor size and orientation) as well as a low-cost mouse that will help designers get the most out of SketchUp's features.
