Marc Rosenbaum, Research Coordinator for the American Fitness Association is the host and instructor for Hair: Know It...Grow It, an interesting and humorous guide to a "uni-sex, non-magical program to stimulate hair growth and strengthen existing hair." Rosenbaum studied the issue and designed the program in response to his own hair loss problems. Rosenbaum's off-the-cuff presentation of how hair grows using charts and blow-ups might not strike a scientist as precisely kosher, but it's accurate and tells viewers what they need to know about the physical composition of hair and how it's "fed" (put plainly, hair is a bloodsucker). Moving out of the lab, Rosenbaum hits the showers and demonstrates the correct way to wash one's hair. Off to the barber's, he talks about the advantages and disadvantages of different hair brushes in terms of healthy hair, and gives a step-by-step demonstration of a scalp massage. The scalp massage is a crucial element in the program since it helps circulate the blood which, in turn, offers more eats for the hair. An unusual, but quite sensible and entertaining (though occasionally a bit heavy-handedly so) program. Hair Styling at Home, on the other hand, is a dud, in many respects. First off, the title on the tape is Looking Good. Secondly, the production values are surprisingly bad. Professional hair stylist Robert Robertella, a New Jersey hair salon owner, opens with a brief overview of the tools of the trade before settling down to business: a "bob" cut, "gypsy shag" cut, and men's "layered cut," as well as demonstrations for styling curly hair and applying a permanent. The lighting is extremely poor, with most shots either in shadow or glare. Robertella often talks to the wrong camera, and indeed in some shots the second cameraman hasn't even bothered to get out of the frame. And finally, the liner notes on the box are misleading, saying that the program will help "women, children, and men look good," but there are no cuts performed on children during the tape. A bad tape, all around. Hair: Know It...Grow It is highly recommended. Hair Styling at Home is not recommended. (For availability of Hair: Know It...Grow It see CRUSTY PEASANT BREAD.)
