Reminding us that those fan-shaped black pictures that parents-to-be proudly share with friends and families aren't merely Baby's First Photos, but important medical tests, Healthy Babies Through Ultrasound explains how and why ultrasounds may be needed during each trimester, while offering expectant parents a look at the process (mercifully, this does not include visuals of a transvaginal scan!). Pointing out what an ultrasound can and cannot do (it can be used to diagnose anatomical problems in utero; it cannot screen for genetic problems), the program also makes accommodations for those people who view high-tech medical procedures with suspicion, featuring a nurse midwife and a doula (labor coach) who give their endorsements (assuring viewers that sonograms won't interfere with natural childbirth and, indeed, help by showing the midwife the baby's position). Are they absolutely medically necessary? Well, no; babies have been born since the dawn of time without ultrasounds. However, they do help monitor fetal health, assist the doctor in planning the delivery, and let expectant parents bond with Cody or Ashlyn before birth. Highly recommended. Aud: P. (R. Reagan)

Star Ratings
As of March 2022, Video Librarian has changed from a four-star rating system to a five-star one. This change allows our reviewers to have a wider range of critical viewpoints, as well as to synchronize with Google’s rating structure. This change affects all reviews from March 2022 onwards. All reviews from before this period will still retain their original rating. Future film submissions will be considered our new 1-5 star criteria.
