Part of an 11-volume series (see the review of Japan in VL-9/94), this video is similar to any number of solid geography/social studies tapes, but with an important difference: there is a definite focus on the children of the country, with the idea that kids can more readily learn about a place through the perspective of those similar in age. The video is chock-full of information about climate, geography, customs, socio-economic ways, natural resources, language, politics, etc. Kids are much more likely to see a foreign country as more than just a reason for homework when they can watch indigenous children be "just like them"--brushing teeth, going to school, playing ball, even engrossed in a fierce Nintendo game! Although the picture quality has an amateur home video look at times (the bulk was shot by an American teacher), the content is excellent. Each title in the series comes with supplementary curriculum for an additional but reasonable cost, from teacher's guides and reproducible masters to related books and games. Recommended. As of March 2022, Video Librarian has changed from a four-star rating system to a five-star one. This change allows our reviewers to have a wider range of critical viewpoints, as well as to synchronize with Google’s rating structure. This change affects all reviews from March 2022 onwards. All reviews from before this period will still retain their original rating. Future film submissions will be considered our new 1-5 star criteria.
