Move over, Apgar scores: the Clinical Neonatal Behavioral Assessment Scale, (or “CLNBAS”) offers new insights into newborn development. This four-point test, administered during the first days after birth and again during the two-week checkup, examines motor skills, crying patterns, habituation to stimuli, and social interactivity, providing doctors and nurses with a greater understanding of a particular baby's temperament and needs, after which advice is passed on to new parents to help them better understand and care for their child. Based on the program developed by Dr. J. Kevin Nugent at the Brazelton Institute (Children's Hospital, Boston), filmmaker Karen McMillen's Helping Parents Understand Their Newborn features Nugent, Dr. T. Berry Brazelton, and other doctors and nurses, who demonstrate how to conduct the assessment and work with parents. Clearly intended for medical professionals--in other words, not a first choice for general consumer collections--this is highly recommended for academic institutions with nursing and medical programs. As of March 2022, Video Librarian has changed from a four-star rating system to a five-star one. This change allows our reviewers to have a wider range of critical viewpoints, as well as to synchronize with Google’s rating structure. This change affects all reviews from March 2022 onwards. All reviews from before this period will still retain their original rating. Future film submissions will be considered our new 1-5 star criteria.
