For those unfamiliar with this popular fitness craze, Pilates is a system of exercise and careful movements developed in the early 1900s by Joseph Hubertus Pilates, a German-born physical therapist. Combining Eastern philosophy, mental conditioning, and exercises that properly align the body, Pilates can help improve overall strength, flexibility, coordination, and posture, while sculpting a slimmer, sleeker body. In this video, certified Pilates instructor Hilary Burnett takes viewers through ten simple exercises, offering the absolute beginner a solid introduction to the world of Pilates. At 24 minutes, however, I found the workout to be too short and not much of a challenge (in all fairness, two other programs are also available at the same price--Pilates Intermediate and Pilates Advanced--that build on this initial title). A better choice here might be Jennifer Kries' single-volume Pilates Method: Precision Pilates (VL-9/01), an inexpensive hour-long program that provides a good introduction to Pilates, while also offering a little tougher workout. As of March 2022, Video Librarian has changed from a four-star rating system to a five-star one. This change allows our reviewers to have a wider range of critical viewpoints, as well as to synchronize with Google’s rating structure. This change affects all reviews from March 2022 onwards. All reviews from before this period will still retain their original rating. Future film submissions will be considered our new 1-5 star criteria.
