Four new entries in EAV's music appreciation series. The hands-down favorite here is Till Eulenspiegel, which uses David Prebenna's delightful illustrations of the story of Germany's impish folk hero set to Strauss's mischievous score. Holst: The Planets uses riveting NASA footage of the planets; but, unfortunately, the tape was struck from a used 16mm print, and the scratches distract from the excellent sound quality. Pictures At An Exhibition nicely blends Russian art gallery footage with Russian architecture, folk dancing, and some truly bizarre drawings of gnomes, dwarves, trolls, and the like. 1812 Overture, by contrast, is rather flat in its long palace shots. Recommended for primary and secondary schools with music appreciation classes. (See THE HISTORY OF ENGLISH LITERATURE for availability).
