Aside from a short introduction shot at a stream in the Pacific Northwest capturing the fun of fly fishing, this entry from the Hooked on Fly Tying series consists of fly-tying instructor Alec Jackson sitting at his work station (with a lot of little tools), methodically constructing elaborate spades—a specific kind of fly used for catching steelhead—in various patterns, each suited to different situations the angler might face. Jackson approaches his task with patience and fine craftsmanship, displaying the strange wizardry involved in turning tiny objects into something that will entice a trout. Creating six variations in all, Jackson helpfully explains how particular water environments suggest the most appropriate lures to use—ties that utilize natural elements such as deer hair; peacock, ostrich, and hen feathers; tinsel; and thread.
