A bit off the beaten path as far as craft tapes go, these two video workshops offer new challenges for the A & C crowd. How To Create Victorian Paper Scrap Art is the better of the pair, guiding viewers through six different projects using Victorian paper scrap: creating pictures, shadowboxes, decorative screens, scrap books and photo albums, and wall hangings. With decorative lace, ribbons, gloves, shiny fabrics, and a little "antique" know-how, viewers can create lovely, eye-catching decorative pieces that have that "gilded age" look. The materials are not that difficult to come by, the voiceover instruction and close-up camerawork are good, and the projects look very classy (and fun). How To Create Your Own Fantasy Carousel Horse, on the other hand, is somewhat more specialized. Diane Headman shows viewers how to take a child's plastic toy horse and build a sturdy, colorful carousel horse from it using the "gesso-sculpture" method. Although the finished product is indeed beautiful and the instruction good, the materials are not as readily available (although they are available through the producers, Rocky Mountain Handicrafts--a fact pointed out many times during the tape). On the other hand, you're not likely to find another "how-to" video on carousel horses. How To Create Victorian Paper Scrap Art is highly recommended. How To Create Your Own Fantasy Carousel Horse is recommended (especially for the collection which has everything.) (Available from: Rocky Mountain Handicrafts, 935 North Grand Ave., Provo, UT 84604.)
