In this video, a group of rappers, producers, entrepreneurs, and proud-to-be hustlers demonstrate some tricks of the trade that have helped them make careers in the music industry at the local and regional levels. The hosts, who together have formed a small rap record label, demonstrate a great deal of street-level smarts and determination in producing, selling, and promoting their sounds. Viewers will get a glance at some key ingredients in successful music production and promotion, including commitment, tenacity, budget control, copyright protection, and marketing (including a humorous look at charging what the market will bear in selling one-to-one to people on the street--in this instance, young males get charged the most, while a mother-to-be gets a bargain on the same CD). On the down side, the camerawork is shaky, and too little time is spent hashing out some of the finer points, but the do-it-yourself ethic at the heart of much street-level popular music (including rock, punk and other genres) is central here, and despite the production flaws, the core advice is solid. A strong optional purchase. Aud: P. (C. Block)

Star Ratings
As of March 2022, Video Librarian has changed from a four-star rating system to a five-star one. This change allows our reviewers to have a wider range of critical viewpoints, as well as to synchronize with Google’s rating structure. This change affects all reviews from March 2022 onwards. All reviews from before this period will still retain their original rating. Future film submissions will be considered our new 1-5 star criteria.
