Based on the book of the same name by C.D. Peterson, How To Leave Your Job And Buy A Business Of Your Own is an excellent overview of the steps necessary to buy an existing business or start a new one. The format of the program has an on-camera host named Steve King who visits successful independent businesspeople, an attorney, and an accountant, to discuss the many issues involved in starting or acquiring a business. Although none of the people are "real" people, the actors obviously rehearsed considerably, because the flow of the program is very smooth (no shifting of eyes reading lines; no "acting" emphasis put on half the words, etc.) With an impressive amount of detail, the program examines the following subjects: preparation (financial and mental: i.e., don't quit your job immediately, and make sure that the complete responsibility of a business is what you really want), choosing the right business, determining affordability, buying vs. starting, funding, considering a franchise, analyzing the business, and negotiating the terms of sale. Viewers who are seriously thinking about buying their own business will still need the professional services of both an accountant and an attorney, but with the information on this tape they'll be much better equipped to complete the groundwork prior to document signing- as well as have a good idea what those documents are all about. Well paced, nicely-produced, and professionally acted, How To Leave Your Job And Buy Business Of Your Own will be a boon to your small business collection at an extremely affordable price. Highly recommended. Editor's Choice. (Available from: Self-Reliance Press, P.O. Box 5045, Brookfield, CT 06804.)
