Children who feel successful with books will want to read, advises elementary school teacher and reading specialist Janice Bennett Dobbert. In this video, which is packed with homespun family vignettes and advice on how to help children become good readers, Ms. Dobbert demonstrates techniques for analyzing new books and involving a young child in reading. While the program does include some good tips, the video has several drawbacks: the program could have been more succinct (at one point, Ms. Dobbert demonstrates her methods by unnecessarily reading a long passage to the audience); several extensive blocks of text require on-screen reading (as opposed to supplementary reading) by the viewer; and, even though a modern, busy family is depicted in an opening scene, ways to set aside quiet one-on-one reading times or deal with household distractions are disappointingly never addressed. Given the price and subject, however, this is still an optional purchase. Aud: P. (J. McDaniel)

Star Ratings
As of March 2022, Video Librarian has changed from a four-star rating system to a five-star one. This change allows our reviewers to have a wider range of critical viewpoints, as well as to synchronize with Google’s rating structure. This change affects all reviews from March 2022 onwards. All reviews from before this period will still retain their original rating. Future film submissions will be considered our new 1-5 star criteria.
