This, the third volume of the "I Want to Read" literacy series, is not quite up to snuff with the first two entries at least during the initial half-hour. Using the same format as the first two tapes, the host begins by discussing syllables, using a dictionary, finding the roots of words, and recognizing compound words. The material doesn't seem to be as well organized, as subjects from the earlier tapes crop up again, and the narrator seems to be jumping around between topics. The subsequent ninety minutes are quite good, however. An excellent list of emergency words are reviewed, as well as a general list of words and phrases commonly found on signs. The next portion of the program is comprised of a step-by-step (or letter-by-letter) guide to cursive writing, which uses excellent onscreen graphics to illustrate how each letter is formed. The final segment of the program discusses the differences between formal and informal letter writing, and advises viewers of various places to go for more help (including the public library). Even with the somewhat aimless meandering of the first half-hour, the remainder of the tape is still good enough to warrant its being highly recommended. (Available from most distributors.)

Star Ratings
As of March 2022, Video Librarian has changed from a four-star rating system to a five-star one. This change allows our reviewers to have a wider range of critical viewpoints, as well as to synchronize with Google’s rating structure. This change affects all reviews from March 2022 onwards. All reviews from before this period will still retain their original rating. Future film submissions will be considered our new 1-5 star criteria.
