These two programs, the latest releases in the excellent "Boys Town Videos for Parents" series, developed at Father Flanagan's Boys' Home in Nebraska, address ways in which parents can cope with the ongoing problems teenagers face today. In I'm Not Everybody!, parents are given a brief overview of the dangerous areas that peer pressure can lead teens into (alcohol, drugs, lying, cheating, and sex), and then given advice on how to establish a good relationship with the teen. The emphasis is on listening closely, showing concern, and, above all, using opportunities to discuss values with children. The second part of the program discusses the importance of knowing where children are at all times, requiring that the child ask permission and give pertinent information (where, what, when) about his/her request, and giving and taking away privileges based on the child's adherence to the parent's regulations. In It's Great To Be Me 1, parents are advised about the importance of self-esteem to a child (feeling successful, loved, important, and confident), how to set realistic short-term and long-term goals for children with clear expectations and possible consequences, and finally, how and when to praise children for their good behaviors. In an area-raising teenagers-where there is still very little material on video, these excellent, inexpensive programs stand out. Highly recommended.
