The latest installment in Warren Hatch's long-running “video microscope” series (see review of Green Beauty Alive Through a Microscope in VL-7/04), this program—which could also be called “The Best of Warren's Backyard”—takes full advantage of the DVD format, which is so well-suited to his time-tested formula: 24 living organisms are filmed through a microscope (and six others—including water lilies, leafcutter bees, and terrestrial mites are shown “up close”) for several minutes, while Hatch provides lively, informative narration. Some of the subjects—which include freshwater clams, leeches, Pacific treefrogs, and water mites—are seen magnified at different strengths, and almost all are shown next to a finger or penny for real-life size comparisons. DVD extras include 21 minutes of bonus footage. A solid and affordable science title for both classroom and public library use, this is recommended. Aud: I, J, H, P. (E. Gieschen)

Star Ratings
As of March 2022, Video Librarian has changed from a four-star rating system to a five-star one. This change allows our reviewers to have a wider range of critical viewpoints, as well as to synchronize with Google’s rating structure. This change affects all reviews from March 2022 onwards. All reviews from before this period will still retain their original rating. Future film submissions will be considered our new 1-5 star criteria.
