In The Beginning

The subtitle of this 11 min. video is: "Parenting Skills from Birth to Two Years." But the fact that it's such a short tape signals that something's strange here. Although it's not immediately evident--as the program opens with an on-camera host talking about why babies cry (hunger, fear, cold, discomfort, etc.)--In the Beginning is meant to be a subtle reminder to first-time parents that a) anger and frustration are natural responses that all parents occasionally feel with babies, and b) these feelings should never be translated into abusive actions. Options discussed in the program include taking time out and being aware of support groups. Although subjects like colic, child-proofing the home, potty training, feeding, and temper tantrums are mentioned, there's no time here to give more than cursory commentary on these topics. The program is primarily concerned about alerting parents to behaviors and situations which are likely to cause stress. The tape concludes with a listing of phone numbers for organizations such as Parents Anonymous and the National Center for Missing & Exploited Children. As part of a counselor's library this tape makes sense; but for general patrons expecting to learn about "parenting skills from birth to two years," it will be a major disappointment. Social organizations and schools may want to consider; not a necessary purchase for public libraries. (See GOING TO COURT for availability.)
