The problem with conventional medicine is that it treats the symptom, not the person, according to Dr. James S. Gordon. While this "magic bullet" approach is excellent for emergency medicine, as well as certain bacterial and viral infections, allopathic medicine is less than optimum for treating chronic conditions. In this episode of the public television series In the Prime, Gordon addresses a small audience on the rising popularity of alternative healthcare, the importance of lifestyle changes to the maintenance of good health (nutrition, exercise, relaxation), and the overarching need for people to take stress management seriously (especially in our hyper-active day and age). Like Andrew Weil's 8 Weeks to Optimum Health (VL-5/97), this program is a good, common-sense introduction to the philosophy of holistic medicine. Recommended. Aud: C, P. (R. Pitman)
